Jack is WLS’s new delivery driver. Having our own dedicated delivery driver means WLS does not have to rely on couriers and therefore we can work to our own schedule. Jack helps to ensure all of our projects stay on track by delivering all the necessary materials and equipment on time. He rarely stops moving during working hours, but we took the opportunity to chat with him on a quiet morning this week to find out how he has been getting on so far.
I have been working at WLS for almost three months now and I am really enjoying it. I deliver any equipment or materials to the various active sites we have around the city. When the project managers order the electronic security systems, they arrive at the office and the storeroom team process them. When I arrive in the morning, there will usually be a batch of stuff for me to take out. I load up the van and off I go. My job is essentially to get everything where it needs to be, as quickly and efficiently as possible.
I am only 21 so I have not long been out of college. I studied IT and graphic design, but my first job after leaving college was as a postman, which I also enjoyed. I did that for three years and then felt like a change. One of WLS’s electronic security engineers recommended me the job here, when the old driver left. In a way, my job at WLS is quite similar to being a postman; I am still delivering, it is just that more things are going to the same place.
I really like the freedom of being a delivery driver. I am not sure I would enjoy being stuck at a desk all day. It is great to get out and see the city, especially when the sun is out. I go all over, so I see a lot of it. I can listen to the radio or music while I am driving, it suits me fine. It is a simple job most of the time, the biggest challenge if often just finding somewhere to park. In London, that is often no easy task. Apart from that, it is really just trying to beat the traffic and get everything where it needs to be. Some days can be really busy, others not so much.
