Goldsmiths is a university based in New Cross in South-East London, that specialises in art, design, computing, the humanities, and social sciences. It is part of the University of London.
Founded in 1891, it is now widely recognised as having one of the UK’s most prestigious Art departments and has so far produced seven Turner Prize winners.
West London Security is the sole electronic security contractor at Goldsmiths and we provide all of the college’s CCTV, access control, intruder alarm and automated security gate needs, from installing new equipment to maintaining, upgrading and extending the coverage of existing systems. To find out more about our long working relationship with Goldsmiths, take a look at this previous case study.
The security control office forms the central hub of security operations for the whole of the Goldsmiths campus and until recently, was crying out for a total overhaul. The old control office was badly outdated, cramped and poorly ventilated. A large desk took up most of the space so that the CCTV monitoring staff had their backs, quite literally, against the wall.
West London Security were asked to give the control office a full-scale refurbishment and fit out. We were tasked with redesigning the layout of the space, redecorating, adding air conditioning and updating all of the equipment. The aim was to provide a spacious, well-lit and well-ventilated working space in which staff could work more comfortably and effectively.
In the office fit out, West London Security turned things around, quite literally, moving the display screens to a different wall so that the CCTV controllers now have plenty of space behind them. Their new two-seat desk has individual LED feature lighting for each of the CCTV staff on shift, which can be controlled using personal under-desk controls.
To deal with the ventilation problem WLS installed a ceiling-mounted Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning system with a wall-mounted control panel within easy reach of the desk. An air re-circulating system draws in fresh air from outside and circulates it around the room, preventing it from becoming stuffy in the summer. WLS also provided a surge protected incoming power supply to protect all of the new electrical equipment.
Also on the ceiling are two speakers which form part of the new inbuilt music system; a Sonos CONNECT wireless HiFi Player, which allows streaming of music over the Wi-Fi network. To keep them comfortable during the long hours they spend at their desks, they are seated in ultra-stylish and fully-adjustable Ergohuman Chairs with lower back and neck support and a breathable mesh design to help keep them cool.
For the CCTV monitoring itself, we installed six wall-mounted, 42” plasma screens which completely cover the end wall of the control room. On the desk, a row of six 19” desk monitors allow closer inspection of individual camera feeds.
Simple, dual joystick controls allow CCTV controllers to highlight a specific camera on the top three, wall-mounted display screens and show them either on a dedicated screen in the bottom row or on one of the screens on the desk in front of them. They can then move the camera to follow a suspect around the campus. There is also a radio system, allowing the CCTV controllers to communicate with security guards elsewhere on the campus, who can then move in on the suspect, on foot.
While the refurbishment took place, WLS set-up a temporary control room so that staff could continue to monitor the CCTV system. This ensured that at no point during the process were Goldsmiths unable to monitor their CCTV. All of the equipment and cabling was hidden where possible, beneath the raised flooring, inside the monitoring station or in wall mounted trunking. The project was completed on time and in budget and Goldsmiths’ security staff no doubt breathed a sigh of relief when they began work in their new, spacious and well-ventilated control office.
